Standard Brick Dimensions As per Different Codes

Standard Brick Dimensions As per Different Codes. Different Brick dimensions

Brick dimensions are one of the most critical criteria to be considered when choosing bricks to ensure that they match in with the style of the building. Selection of brick is determined based on the particular application in which the brick is used. Because bricks could be used in different constructions, they require specific brick sizes.

There are several standards each set by a country providing uniform sizes for bricks such as ASTM (American Standard for Testing Materials), BS (British Standard), CSA (Canadian Standards Association), and IS (Indian Standard) for example.

Tolerances, for example, length plus or minus 3.0 mm, width plus or minus 1.5 mm, depth plus or minus 1.5 mm, are required in the normal traditional size adopted on the specific position.

The bricks of good quality must be of uniform scale. Conventional bricks shall have a dimension of 225 x 110 x 75 mm. Only bricks of one appropriate dimension shall be used in one project unless the Client / Consultant expressly permits.

Now we are going to discuss different types of bricks standard size and shape bellow:

1. Bricks Sizes as per ASTM (International)

The bricks of good quality must be of uniform scale. Conventional bricks shall have a dimension of 203 × 92 × 57 mm. The dimension of brick 194 × 92 × 57 mm for modular bricks are commonly used in construction.

Nonetheless, ASTM international specifications such as ASTM C62 (Standard Specification for Building Bricks (Solid Masonry Units Made from Clay or Shale), ASTM C216 (Standard Specification for Facing Bricks (Solid Masonry Units Made from Clay or Shale), ASTM C652 (Standard Specification for Hollow Masonry Units Made from Clay or Shale), and ASTM C1088 (Standard Specification for Thin Venees).

Nevertheless, ASTM International Standards set tolerable variations in the specified brick sizes. In the standard traditional size adopted on a particular job, the following tolerances are allowed.

  • Length plus or minus 3.0 mm
  • Breadth plus or minus 1.5 mm
  • Depth plus or minus 1.5 mm

2. Bricks Sizes as per IS-1077 (Indian Standard)

The standard rectangular size of common building bricks is 190 x 90 x 90 mm or 190 x 90 x 40 mm (length x depth x height) and is based on IS 1077 specification (Common burnt clay building bricks).

The non-modular dimension of the brick is 230 x 110 x 70 cm, or 230 x 110 x 30 (length x depth x height). Also, the sizes of bricks can be 70 x 110 x 70 mm (length x depth x height) for proper bond arrangement and standard dimensions for brickwork with the non-modular sizes.

3. Bricks Sizes as per Canadian Standard Associations

Canadian Standard Association CSA A82, similar to ASTM international, does not stipulate different sizes of bricks. However, it has defined acceptable variations in the size of the brick that should not be violated as set out in the table.

Standard Brick Dimensions As per Different Codes

4. Australian Standard

The standard brick scale is 230 x 110 x 76 mm (length x width x height), based on the Australian Standard AS 4455. Many bricks, however, have working sizes like 290 x 90 x 90 mm and 290 x 90 x 50 mm.

5. British Standard

A typical brick ‘s regular size is 215 x 102.5 x 65 in mm (length x depth x height) thickness.

6. Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI)

Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) officials said a brick’s standard size is 10x5x3 inches, but the bricks manufactured in some brick kilns are 9×4.5×2.8 inches thick.
