INGREDIENT OF BRICKS CLAY AND ITS FUNCTION

Functions of different ingredient of bricks clay

  • ALUMINA
  1. It gives plasticity to the earth
  2. Excess alumina shrinks the brick on drying.
  3. The brick will warb during burning.
  4. It makes the brick too hard on burning.
  • SILICA
  1. It prevents cracking and shrinking.
  2. It prevents the warping of raw brick.
  3. It helps making uniform shape of bricks.
  4. It helps the brick brittle if in excess.
  5. The durability of brick depends on the proper proportioning of silica.
  6. Excess silica destroys the cohesion between particles.
  • LIME
  1. Lime prevents shrinkage of warb bricks.
  2. It helps to fuse the brick.
  3. Excess of lime causes the bricks to melt and hence the shape is lost.
  4. It results in splitting of bricks if in excess.
  • OXIDE OF IRON
  1. The color of bricks depends on the proper proportioning of oxide of iron.
  2. It helps to fuse sand.
  3. Excess oxide of iron makes the brick dark blue or blackish.
  4. The color of bricks will be yellow if oxide of iron is less.
  • MAGNESIA
  1. It prevents shrinkage.
  2. Excess magnesia leads the bricks to decay.
  • ORGANIC MATTER
  1. It disintegrates the ingredients of  brick earth.
